OLYMPIC NEWS & NOTES: SAMARANCH COMPLETING SALT LAKE TOUR

IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch was among the
first to see a new animated version of the SLOC's "top
secret" logo while in Salt Lake City yesterday for the
second day of a three-day visit, according to Lisa Riley
Roche in the DESERET NEWS. The SLOC has "a chance to hear"
what Samaranch thinks of the design before submitting it to
the IOC Exec Committee, which meets next month and must
approve the logo before it can be registered as a trademark
around the world. SLOC Image Dir Mary Gaddie: "I'm real
nervous. This is a man who has seen many, many Olympic
logos and symbols" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 4/24).
NUMBER'S UP: SLOC Licensing Dir Rod Hamson "said
anything that could be associated" with the 2002 Winter
Games is protected from unauthorized use by federal law,
including the use of the year of the event, while speaking
to resort area retailers at the SLOC's first marketing
update session. Despite the remarks, a local trademark
attorney who asked not to be identified said the federal
Amateur Sports Act of '78 "doesn't deal with dates." He
added he thought it would be "difficult to enforce. They
have statutory rights with respect to the word 'Olympic' and
the (five Olympic) rings, but it doesn't necessarily go to
dates" (Lisa Riley Roche, DESERET NEWS, 4/24).
