HORSE RACING INDUSTRY LOOKS TO UNITE IN NEW MARKETING PLAN

The group of leading Thoroughbred organizations have
agreed to create a national coordination and marketing
structure for the sport. The N.Y. TIMES is reporting that a
group of "leading" horse racing execs and organizations met
yesterday in Lexington, KY, to implement some of the goals,
including efforts to "unite the industry, increase revenues
and attract people to tracks to reverse the decline of live
racing." One of the "main goals" of the new alliance will
be to pool TV rights and simulcasts of races, so that it
"can control simulcast betting that is now sold individually
by race tracks to other tracks and sites." The group is
aiming to raise $50M a year for national advertising, TV
exposure and marketing. An eight-person oversight committee
was formed, including Breeders' Cup Chair James Bassett and
Churchill Downs Chair William Farish (N.Y. TIMES, 4/18).
