US SKI TEAM DIRECTOR STEPS DOWN FROM POST

PAUL MAJOR announced his resignation as VP/Athletics,
US Ski and Snowboard Assoc., according to Tony Chamberlain
of the BOSTON GLOBE. Major joined the US Ski Team as a
women's coach in '84 and served as overall Athletic Director
since '96. In the past two years, Major "has come under
heavy fire for what critics described as a lack of progress
and results, especially in the technical teams." Ski Team
President & CEO Bill Marolt said the "decision was Major's
alone." Major: "I have been in a leadership position within
the team for over 10 years. ... I feel it is time for me to
move forward into some new challenges" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/16).
In Salt Lake City, Wina Sturgeon writes that Major's
resignation was spurred by a letter "demanding" his removal
that was sent to Marolt last week and was signed by 16
national team skiers. Major said that he "was not aloof or
indifferent" to racers and that problems arose from "making
tough decisions" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 4/16).
