USOC TABS MITCHELL AS ETHICS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIR

USOC President William Hybl appointed former U.S.
Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell as Chair of the
USOC's '97-2000 Ethics Oversight Committee. Kenneth
Duberstein, who served as President Ronald Reagan's Chief of
Staff was appointed Co-Chair (USOC). Mitchell, "once
considered" for the MLB Commissioner position, said he
accepted the non-salaried job because "I am a sports fan ...
and an American interested in the integrity of the Olympics"
(WASHINGTON POST, 4/16). The committee was created by Hybl
in '91 following conflict-of-interest charges that forced
former USOC President Robert Helmick to resign after
accepting payments from entities "with ties to the Olympic
movement" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE TELEGRAPH, 4/15).
