LEAGUE NOTES

In Sunday's N.Y. TIMES, Mike Freeman wrote of the use
of painkillers among NFL players as players, coaches and
league execs interviewed "estimate that as many as 10
percent of the league's more than 1,500 players have serious
addiction problems." Said one GM: "It's the climate of the
sport" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/13)....The AP's Stephen Wade profiled
the World League, which is losing as much as $12M a year and
has an image that "remains fuzzy" for most Europeans.
Reebok has departed as a major sponsor and WLAF merchandise
sales have been "so-so." Attendance last year increased 18%
from '95 to 18,000 a game and American football "draws about
as well as any other team sport in Europe -- except
     topflight soccer" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/13).
