A TALE OF TWO CITIES AS MLS EXPANDS TO CHICAGO AND MIAMI

MLS Commissioner Doug Logan announced yesterday that
the league will add franchises in Miami and Chicago in '98,
according to Len Ziehm of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Logan said
an "understanding" has been reached on a five-year lease
deal for the use of Soldier Field for the Chicago franchise.
Colorado Rapids Owner-Operator Philip Anschutz purchased the
Chicago franchise after exercising an option acquired when
he became a charter league investor. Logan added the team's
name, colors, front-office personnel and plans for a ticket
drive would be announced in early May. Names "under
consideration" include the Rhythm, Inferno, Wind and
     Marauders (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/10). Anschutz's option
called for him to pay $5M for the team, the original price
of an MLS franchise (Jerry Langdon, USA TODAY, 4/10). A
group led by FL businessmen Ken Horowitz and Jon Stoll paid
$20M to secure the Miami franchise. The team has a ten-year
lease agreement at the Orange Bowl (MIAMI HERALD, 4/10).
