LEAGUE NOTES

SI's Jackie MacMullan writes on the IRS investigation
of NBA refs on tax evasion. MacMullan: "Although NBA
commissioner David Stern has publicly adopted a wait-and-see
stance, league sources confirmed that a ref's conviction
will result in his automatic termination -- the penalty for
any felony conviction, as spelled out in the collective
bargaining agreement." More MacMullan: "Even if more
indictments are handed down soon, the NBA feels it can get
through the season" (SI, 3/24)....In Miami, Edwin Pope
writes on tennis' Lipton Invitational and tournament
promoter Butch Buchholz. Pope notes the event has donated
food to charitable agencies, and "generated millions" for
inner-city youth tennis, boys and girls clubs and the
homeless. Buchholz: "What we're trying to do goes beyond
tennis. This is about entertainment, about food
experiences, about fashion-shopping experiences. It's about
serving the customer" (MIAMI HERALD, 3/21).
