As the 49ers kick off their campaign for a new stadium,
a new poll finds the June 3 ballot measure trailing by 8
points, according to Matier & Ross in today's S.F.
CHRONICLE. According to survey commissioned by the
CHRONICLE, 47% of voters oppose the stadium plan, 39% are in
favor and 14% are undecided. The poll reached 600 San
Franciscans, and was conducted by pollster Marc Baldassare.
The measure calls for San Francisco to invest $100M in
lease-revenue bonds for a $536M stadium and shopping
complex. Jack Davis, campaign manager for the 49ers "acted
as if the poll was the best news he'd heard all week."
Davis: "We've been creamed everywhere, and we're down 8
points? That's great." The poll, which has a margin of
error of +/- 4%, shows that most voters in all age groups
oppose the stadium deal and that 34% also believe the
complex will not create any new jobs (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/10).
DEVELOPERS PLAN: In Saturday's CHRONICLE, Edward
Epstein examines development plans adjacent to the 49ers'
new stadium at Candlestick Point. Developer Mills Corp.
plans to open a virtual reality games center at the mall in
association with Gameworks, a joint venture of Universal
Studios, Sega and movie studio Dreamworks. Along with a
49ers retail outlet, potential destinations include a 49ers
Hall of Fame and windsurfing competitions at Candlestick
Point (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/8).
