Yankees Manager Joe Torre "has signed an exclusive
contract with AOL's The Book Report to post an excerpt of
his new autobiography on its site beginning today,"
according to Mary Huhn of the N.Y. POST. "Chasing the
Dream: My Life Long Journey to the World Series" by Torre
along with SI's Tom Verducci is published by Bantam and goes
on sale next Thursday (N.Y. POST, 2/27). In the book, Torre
revels that Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner was "even more
involved in day-to-day matters during the Yankees'
championship season than was first believed, writing that
the owner occasionally second-guessed Torre about game
decisions and had a particular penchant for blaming Torre's
coaches when things went awry," according to Jon Heyman of
NEWSDAY. One excerpt from the book: "George would second-
guess me sometimes about game decisions ... That didn't
bother me. I was harder on myself than anyone else when
things didn't work out. But George never second-guessed me
on the same decisions on which I'd beat myself up. He never
hit on the same nerve, so his second-guessing never rattled
me" (NEWSDAY, 2/27).
