Former San Diego City Councilman Bruce Henderson and
attorney Mike Aguirre yesterday "declared their legal
challenge dead" to stop expansion efforts for Jack Murphy
Stadium, according to LaVelle & Bloom in the SAN DIEGO
UNION-TRIBUNE. In a telephone call with a UNION-TRIBUNE
reporter, Henderson and Aguirre said there will be no
further motions, and no appeal, after they lost in
opposition to the city's $78M expansion efforts. Aguirre:
"The time has come for us to listen to the voice of the
people. Their wishes are for us not to continue with the
matter and we're going to respect that." Aguirre added that
the decision to drop the case "was influenced" by a
conversation Henderson had with Qualcomm Senior VP Dan Pegg.
Qualcomm is in talks to for a naming rights deal at Jack
Murphy that would have been jeopardized by any further legal
motions. Aguirre and another Henderson lawyer, Bob Ottilie,
also said that "several death threats" had been phoned to
their offices yesterday. Mayor Susan Golding and other city
officials "reacted cautiously" to Henderson's and Aguirre's
declaration. Golding: "They change what they say so often I
can't keep up with it" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/27).
