ABC AND CBS WILL PUT ON THE GLOVES; BUT WILL VIEWERS WATCH?

Both ABC and CBS Sports announced new boxing packages,
according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. CBS'
boxing will start March 30 with a Buster Douglas-Brian Scott
fight. CBS' telecasts will be on weekend afternoons and
ABC's ten-fight package will be part of its "Wide World of
Sports." CBS Sports VP/Programming Rob Correa: "There's an
important place for boxing in the network scheme." A-B's
Budweiser will sponsor the CBS fights, but Sandomir notes
whether boxing "yields visible ratings or solid advertising
support remains to be seen" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/25). Correa
predicted an average rating in the "mid-2s" (Steve Zipay
NEWSDAY, 2/25). With six bouts in '96, CBS did an average
rating of 2.2 (Mike Bruton, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 2/25).
