SPONSORS STILL FIND THEIR WAY ALONG THE CART PATH

Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) "has seen plenty
of changes -- even turmoil -- the past two years. But to
date, the racing circuit's sponsors have stuck with the CART
series and its teams," according to Bill Koenig of the
INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS. Companies such as Philip Morris,
Mercedes-Benz and Toyota have continued their involvement
with CART. Others, including MCI, have "increased their
sponsorships." MCI has an "MCI Million" award -- a $1M
bonus if a driver wins four specified races -- and also
signed an agreement to be CART's official telecom company.
INT'L PUSH: Steve Potter, manager of North American
sports marketing for Mercedes-Benz: "The question is not why
are we still there. The question is why would we leave?"
Sponsors, including Motorola, say "CART's biggest attraction
is its international audience." Last year, CART began
racing in Brazil, a "major market for several sponsors,"
and will add a race in Japan in '98, and is "looking to
     establish" a European event (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 2/23).
