LEAGUE NOTES

          The NFLPA "has threatened to de-certify agents who
     distribute its salary survey" (USA TODAY, 2/20)....NBA ref
     Mike Mathis was indicted by a federal grand jury on five
     counts of tax fraud.  He is the third NBA ref to be indicted
     in the past week (Mult., 2/20)....The WNBA released its
     inaugural schedule, with its opening games set for Saturday,
     June 21.  One opener will be televised live on NBC.  The
     season ends August 24.  The league's TV schedule consists of
     29 televised games on NBC, ESPN and Lifetime, with ten games
     on Saturday, nine on Friday, five on Monday, three on
     Tuesday and one Thursday and one Sunday contest.  NBC and
     ESPN will both carry ten games, with Lifetime getting nine
     (WNBA)....In Miami, Michelle Kaufman of the HERALD takes an
     extensive look at the NBA's drop in scoring.  Kaufman: "Does
     all this mean the game of basketball is 'going down in a
     handbasket,' as Charles Barkley said?  Maybe not. Despite
     the lower scores, the margin of victory is still the same --
      right around 11 points in the NBA" (MIAMI HERALD, 2/20)
