MLS isn't expanding until '99 "at the earliest," but
St. Louis soccer advocates "hope" an exhibition match to be
played in March will "send a message to the league that St.
Louis is ready to support a professional outdoor team,"
according to Tom Timmermann in the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH.
The Wizards-Crew will play at A-B Conference & Sports Center
on March 22. Timmermann adds that MLS would "love" to have
a team in the area, home of league sponsor, Anheuser-Busch,
but the lack of a "suitable" stadium has kept St. Louis off
the list of candidates (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 2/18).
THE COOKE, THE UNITED AND HIS STADIUM: D.C. United has
had talks with Redskins Owner Jack Kent Cooke about possibly
moving the team to Cooke's new stadium in Prince George's
County. The team has two years left on its RFK lease.
United President Kevin Payne: "We need to see some evidence
the city wants us to stay. We feel we are very important to
the city. ... Our name is D.C. United. We'd like to stay in
D.C." (Steven Goff, WASHINGTON POST, 2/19).
YOU SAY YOU WANT A ...: The Revolution reported 15,000
tickets were sold Monday when sales opened for an April 20
doubleheader at Foxboro featuring a U.S.-Mexico World Cup
qualifier and a Mutiny-Revolution contest (USA TODAY, 2/19).
