FRANCHISE NOTES

In San Diego, Padres Owner John Moores was profiled by
Tom Cushman in the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Cushman writes
how "impressed" he is "by the manner in which [Moores has]
directly interlaced the baseball team with community youth,"
on Moores' and team President Larry Lucchino's "surgery" on
the team's image: "They've done so, in part, because the
commitment extends to putting the right kinds of citizens in
their uniforms" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/12)....The Jets
say their season-ticket waiting list is up 800 to "about"
10,800 since reports that Bill Parcells would join the team
surfaced during the playoffs (USA TODAY, 2/13). The DAILY
NEWS' Gary Myers puts Parcells' deal at six years, $14.4M,
making him the "highest paid coach/GM in NFL history" (N.Y.
DAILY NEWS, 2/13)....OH-based Marcus Advertising, which
handled the former Browns' advertising for 25 years, has
been hired by the new Browns franchise to market team events
and to promote PSL sales for the new football stadium
     (CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS, 1/27 issue)....In Toronto,
Marty York profiles real-estate "tycoon" Jack Singer, who is
reportedly set to put up C$70M as part of a consortium
attempting to purchase the Blue Jays, CFL Argonauts and the
SkyDome. York: "Baseball administrators are whispering
privately that they aren't certain whether they want to
allow someone quite as flamboyant as Singer into their
fraternity. His involvement in the consortium is partly why
the screening process has taken as long as it has" (Toronto
GLOBE & MAIL, 2/13)....ESPN's Keith Olbermann, on the
Angels' new uniforms: "Hey nice uniforms, fast pitch or slow
     pitch?" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 2/13).
