LOCAL LEADERS TO ASK MARICOPA COUNTY FOR STADIUM MONEY

In Arizona, a coalition of business and civic leaders
wants to fund an east Valley multi-purpose domed stadium
using the same quarter-cent sales tax being used for Bank
One Ballpark in Phoenix, according to Moeser & Kwok in the
ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The mayors of Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe
are expected to join AZ State Rep Jeff Groscost at a news
conference today to announce the plan. The plan "most
likely" would only tax east Valley residents, and then "only
after approval from voters in each city." The proposal
would extend the Bank One Ballpark tax, which is now
scheduled to expire in '98, long enough to pay for the $250M
facility. Still to be discussed are the site of the
facility, when cities would vote, and how stadium revenue
would be divided (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/29).
