          Former Major Leaguer CURT FLOOD died at the age of 59
     from throat cancer.  Flood was the first player to challenge
     baseball's reserve system, taking his case to the Supreme
     Court.  While he lost the decision, he "started the wheels
     rolling" to free agency (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/21)....Magic
     Owner RICH DEVOS is awaiting a heart transplant (ORLANDO
     SENTINEL, 1/18)....OSCAR DE LA HOYA, on boxing: "I'm trying
     to get kids to watch boxing.  I'm trying to get women to
     watch boxing.  I'm trying to bring it back to where it was
     and presenting yourself in a good way will get more people
     watching" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/19).....NEWSWEEK's Richard
     Ernsberger profiles OKSANA BAIUL after her DWI charge:
     "Owing to a growth spurt and nagging injuries, her skating
     skills have deteriorated. ... It seems that the wide-eyed
     Cinderella is fast turning into another wealthy athlete with
     public-relations problems" (NEWSWEEK, 1/27).
