          In S.F., Ira Miller notes that in addition to the
     resignation of 49ers Coach George Seifert yesterday, Bill
     Walsh will be moved to the front office as an assistant to
     club President Carmen Policy (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/16).... The
     Panthers wouldn't allow the Saints to interview GM Bill
     Polian and team officials say they expect him to remain with
     the organization (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/16)....In N.Y., 
     responding to rumors that he wanted Patriots Coach Bill
     Parcells to coach the Giants, Giants Co-Owner Bob Tisch
     said, "Parcells is working for the Boston Patriots." 
     NEWSDAY's Bob Glauber writes that Tisch was "evidently
     forgetful of the fact the team has been referred to as New
     England for more than a quarter century" (NEWSDAY, 1/16).
     ...In N.Y., columnist Joel Sherman, on the kickoff of the
     Mets' second annual Winter Caravan yesterday: "There were 14
     players, three coaches, a manager and a GM in attendance at
     a mid-town bank and they combined for all the star power of
     a play so far off Broadway even The Village Voice would
     ignore it" (N.Y. POST, 1/16).
