FRANCHISE NOTES

In S.F., Ira Miller notes that in addition to the

Walsh will be moved to the front office as an assistant to
club President Carmen Policy (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/16).... The
Panthers wouldn't allow the Saints to interview GM Bill
Polian and team officials say they expect him to remain with
the organization (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/16)....In N.Y.,
responding to rumors that he wanted Patriots Coach Bill
Parcells to coach the Giants, Giants Co-Owner Bob Tisch
said, "Parcells is working for the Boston Patriots."
NEWSDAY's Bob Glauber writes that Tisch was "evidently
forgetful of the fact the team has been referred to as New
England for more than a quarter century" (NEWSDAY, 1/16).
...In N.Y., columnist Joel Sherman, on the kickoff of the
Mets' second annual Winter Caravan yesterday: "There were 14
players, three coaches, a manager and a GM in attendance at
a mid-town bank and they combined for all the star power of
a play so far off Broadway even The Village Voice would
     ignore it" (N.Y. POST, 1/16).
