LEAGUE NOTES

During the Super Show in Atlanta next month, the NBA
has bought 2,000 tickets for its sponsors and employees for
the Bulls-Hawks game (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 1/15). In Salt
Lake, Gordon Monson writes on the NBA under the header,
"Awful State Of The NBA Deserves Pity." Monson: "Pity the
game. Pity the punks who play it" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE,
1/14). In Charlotte, Ron Green: "News that public interest
in college and pro basketball has dropped should come as no
surprise. The colleges are losing too many of their stars
early to the pros, where too many of the stars become
arrogant and whiny" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/15)....USTA
President Harry Marmion is interviewed in TENNIS. Marmion:
"Grassroots tennis must have more resources. We're spending
so much money on the [U.S] Open that I worry we're not
feeding money into grassroots tennis at as great a degree as
     we should" (TENNIS, 1/97).
