NCAA CONVENTION ENDS BY ALTERING NBA DRAFT GUIDELINES

"In its ongoing effort to address the issue of non-
seniors entering the NBA draft," the NCAA voted to modify a
rule created two years ago that allowed players to enter the
draft but regain their college eligibility, according to
David Nakamura of the WASHINGTON POST. Non-seniors who are
drafted by an NBA team will no longer have the right to
regain eligibility within 30 days if they do not like their
draft position and have not signed with an agent. Non-
drafted players who have not signed with an agent may regain
their eligibility. NCAA President Gene Corrigan: "I worry
about the youngster who the unscrupulous agent tells will be
picked in the first round, and he comes out and isn't picked
in the first round and gets nothing" (WASHINGTON POST,
1/15). In L.A., Lisa Dillman notes there was also "concern
that a certain segment of players, just under the highest
level, had insufficient information to determine their
market value." The NCAA is "hoping now that the NBA follows
through on a promised undergraduate advisory committee,
similar to a current NFL panel," which will evaluate the
     draft potential of non-seniors (L.A. TIMES, 1/15).
