Scandia Worldwide Inc., a Montclair, NJ-based sports
marketing firm, has been commissioned by Charlotte, NC-based
Speedway Motorsports Inc. to coordinate a title rights search for
the Texas Int'l Raceway in Fort Worth as well as Speedway tracks
in Atlanta, Charlotte and Bristol, TN, according to Rick Carroll
of the DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL. Nick DeBellis, Exec VP &
Managing Partner of Scandia Worldwide, said that a package deal
using the same corporate name for the four tracks is a
possibility, "but the more likely scenario" is each of speedway's
having a different sponsor (DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/11
issue).
EXPANDING EMPIRE: Speedway Motorsports CEO Bruton Smith will
"extend his organization's reach" to the West Coast with the
purchase of Sears Point Int'l Raceway in Sonoma, CA, according to
Ben Blake of the RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH. Sears Point -- a 2.4
mile road course, one of two road circuits on the NASCAR schedule
-- will become Smith's fifth NASCAR Winston Cup track. Blake
notes that Smith is building a "racing empire," but his final
intentions are "unclear". He has "repeatedly denied" that he
wants to set up a rival organization to NASCAR. Yet with the
addition of Sears Point, one fourth, or eight of 32, of the
Winston Cup schedule will be contested on Smith- owned tracks
(RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 11/13).
