NAMES IN THE NEWS

     CBS' "60 Minutes" examined the sexual promiscuity of
athletes, focusing on the case of NASCAR driver, TIM RICHMOND,
who died from AIDS in '89, but who never told anyone he had the
virus.  CBS' Morley Safer on Richmond: "When he died of AIDS in
1989, he left behind a trail of fear. No one knows how many women
he might have infected."  Safer added, "No matter how many horror
stories on the private behavior of athletes gets reported,
American's adulation of sportsman goes on undiminished. In fact,
it is often the case, that the worse the reputation, the more
popular the hero."  Sportswriter SALLY JENKINS: "Not only do we
congratulate our athletes for their promiscuity, but as a
society, we tend to assume there might be something wrong with
them if they are not promiscuous" ("60 Minutes," CBS,
11/10)....JUWAN HOWARD was arrested and charged with driving
while intoxicated after his '95 Mercedes was spotted speeding in
downtown DC.  Howard was assigned a December 6 court date with
regard to the matter (Mult., 11/11).
