PAYNE GIVES HIS FAREWELL; SAYS ATLANTA WAS PROFITABLE

ACOG President Billy Payne gave Atlanta's "formal farewell"
to the USOC Tuesday in Indianapolis and declared that "when the
final books are closed, the 1996 Games will show a profit,"
according to Karen Allen in the USA TODAY. Payne, who will give
a formal report to the IOC next month, said financial paperwork
won't be completed before next spring, but ACOG "will finish in
the black." Payne: "We don't expect tens of millions in surplus,
but we're going to be above the zero line." Payne, on rumors
ACOG would need financial bailout, possibly from one of its
sponsors: "There's never been any conversation about that." USOC
Deputy Secretary General John Krimsky: "On behalf of the USOC,
I'll be thrilled to share in any surplus." Payne urged other
U.S. cities to get involved in the Olympic spirit and hopes
Atlanta's legacy will be the "legacy of possibility" (USA TODAY,
10/30).
