U.S. Skiing has a "budget shortfall" of $1.15M, and the budget
cut will have "the largest impact" on developing athletes, who
will no longer be funded. U.S. Skiing Exec Dir Bill Marolt:
"Basically we got to a point, when we had a shortfall of revenue
and an increase of expense on the events side and had to make a
mid-year adjustment. It is a problem and a step backward and is
something we have to do but I hope by year's end we can be in a
stable financial position. We had a $1.15 million cut, company
wide" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 10/27)....The USOC said it will budget
$8M over the next four years to help "endangered Olympic sports"
in a cooperative effort with the NCAA. The USOC started the
program in the wake of decisions made by many schools to drop
Olympic sports such as wrestling and men's gymnastics because of
financial constraints (AP/SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 10/26).
