The NBA will unveil its list of the league's 50 Greatest
Players tomorrow in New York as part of its 50th Anniversary.
One event in January has Red Auerbach at the Smithsonian for what
the league is calling "Reminiscing with Red." Joining Auerbach
at the Smithsonian event will be Commissioner David Stern, Billy
Cunningham, Bill Russell and broadcaster Marty Glickman (Peter
May, BOSTON GLOBE, 10/27).
NEWS & NOTES: Stern is "set to give" some teams who are
losing money or struggling to break even, a subsidy from a re-
distribution of market extension fees -- money paid into a
central fund by teams that broadcast their games beyond a 75-mile
radius. The NBA has about $50M in the fund now and teams that
play in small markets "will be eligible for a payment" (Chris
Sheridan, AP/HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 10/26). ...One topic expected to
be discussed at this week's NBA Board of Governors meeting is the
"long-argued" proposal to expand NBA rosters from 12 to 15
players, according to ESPN's David Aldridge ("SportsCenter,"
ESPN, 10/25)....Magic President/CEO Bob Vander Weide will meet
with NBA Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik Wednesday to discuss the
"viability of Orlando pursuing tampering charges related" to the
Lakers signing Shaquille O'Neal (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 10/28).
