POLL SHOWS 49ERS HAVE UPHILL BATTLE FOR STADIUM SUPPORT

In San Francisco, "only" 28% of city voters approve building
a new stadium for the 49ers financed "in part by public funds,"
according to poll by the S.F. CHRONICLE and reported by Matier &
Ross. Of those surveyed, 65% said they oppose using public
funds; 7% were undecided. The telephone survey of 600 registered
San Francisco voters, conducted October 12-15, found "opposition
across the board" to financing a stadium with public money.
Matier & Ross note why a new stadium is going to be "a hard
sell," as "no matter what plan the 49ers come up with, the deal
is going to need some type of tax money." Secondly, it would
also require the "backing of San Francisco's credit line ...
which may not go over well with the public" (S.F. CHRONICLE,
10/28).
