GRIZZLIES TRY TO MAKE INROADS WITH VANCOUVER'S

Orca Bay Asian Sales Development Manager Dora Sun and her
efforts to "translate Asian interest in basketball into gate
receipts" for the Grizzlies are examined by David Thomas of the
FINANCIAL POST. Thomas writes that both Sun and Orca Bay Sports
& Entertainment "are acutely aware" that most of Vancouver's
approximately 250,000 ethnic Chinese are recent immigrants from
overseas markets "where the NBA is extremely popular." Grizzlies
"in-house estimates" put average-game Asian attendance at around
15% or more. Thomas notes that in a "savvy move," Sun pushed to
tinker with the translation of the Grizzlies' name. Originally
known as the "grey bear," the Grizzlies are now known as "fui
hong" in Cantonese and "kwei hsung" in Mandarin, which both mean
"strong and powerful bear." While Orca Bay "seems" to be
successful in it's NBA promotions, marketing VP Jeff Domansky of
PJS Communications, says it "isn't likely" to make inroads with
Asians in hockey because there isn't a market for the sport in
Asia (FINANCIAL POST, 10/24).
