LEAGUE NOTES

     Advanta and IMG are expected to announced that the U.S.
Indoor tennis tournament in Philadelphia will return to the area
next year.  Sources close to the event say barring any last
minute problems, Advanta will sponsor the event in February at
the CoreStates Center. IMG runs the event (PHILA. DAILY NEWS,
10/10)....MLS begins its semi-final playoff round tonight.
NEWSDAY's John Jeansonne writes MLS is studying a potential
expansion franchise in Queens, NY.  MLS Commissioner Doug Logan
said the MLS Cup on October 20 in Foxboro, MA could draw 40,000
fans (NEWSDAY, 10/10). ...The high number of college
underclassman making themselves eligible for the NBA is examined
by Larry Whiteside of the BOSTON GLOBE under the header, "NBA
Again Becoming Arena for Child's Play."  Raptors Exec VP Isiah
Thomas: "At some point in time, the NCAA and the NBA have to come
up with some uniform body of rules to conduct and act as one
business rather than hide under a cloud of education and social
issues" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/10).
