GOLF WORLD TOUR COMING ... EVENTUALLY

     The prospect of a World Golf Tour was examined by SI's Jaime
Diaz on CNN's "Pro Golf Weekly."  Diaz: "There will someday be a
World Golf Tour. ... It's inevitable, because for too long golf
has failed to pit the best players against each other on a
regular basis."  According to Diaz, the proposed World Tour would
consist of a series of 10-20 tournaments played on five different
continents in which all top players would play.  Diaz: "If a
renegade group of organizers and multi-national corporations
instituted a real world league it would either knock the PGA
[Tour] off its mountain top or start a power struggle that would
leave the game damaged." Diaz said Commissioner Tim Finchem is
"pushing for a gradual transition toward more full-field
international events that would be sanctioned by the existing
five major tours" ("Pro Golf Weekly," CNN, 9/29).
