FRANCHISE NOTES

     Designs are "nearly complete" on a third jersey for the
Lightning.  The new sweater is tentatively scheduled to make its
debut January 25 (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 9/30)....Turner Broadcasting is
in the "final stages" of completing an application for an
expansion NHL franchise to play at a proposed downtown Atlanta
arena.  Turner Sports President Harvey Schiller:  "TBS intends to
apply to own and operate a franchise in Atlanta.  That's our
intention and the NHL has been made aware of our continuing
interest" (N.Y. POST, 9/28)....AFL Orlando Predators Managing
General Partner Don Dizney denies the team has been sold or that
a sale is "imminent."  However, Dizney, who bought controlling
interest in the Predators with Jim English in '92, added the team
"is interested in being sold" and that "a lot of people" are
interested in buying the club (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 9/28)....Michael
Kinsman of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE examines the "casual, yet
intense approach" used by Padres Owner John Moores and President
Larry Lucchino in running the franchise operations (SAN DIEGO
UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/27).
