DISAGREEMENTS OVER HAWKS NEST STARTING TO GET RESOLVED

A meeting between officials of TBS and the City of Atlanta
"hammered out sticking points" regarding a $215M downtown arena
for the Hawks, according to Unger & Saporta of the ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION. Steven Labovitz, Mayor Bill Campbell's Chief of
Staff and lead negotiator on the arena, said, "Negotiations are
winding down. We believe everything will be ready by the middle
of next week to be presented to all the different entities that
have to sign off on the deal." One issue was resolved when
Turner agreed to pay $100,000 for a job-training program during
the arena's construction. The city, which has been "widely
criticized for its vending contract" with Munson Steed during the
Olympics, also gave Turner control of vending outside the arena.
In return, Turner will be "responsible for maintaining the public
spaces" and revenues from a Turner vending program "would go
toward repaying bonds used to finance the arena" (ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION, 9/20).
