THEY GOT THE LOOK: SYDNEY ORGANIZERS UNVEIL OLYMPIC LOGO

     Sydney Olympic Organizers recently unveiled the logo for the
2000 Summer Games, according to Karene Witcher of the WALL STREET
JOURNAL.  The configuration of three boomerangs is "supposed to
evoke an image" of a running athlete holding an Olympic torch
with a smoke trail that is the "outline of one of Australia's
best-known tourist attractions," the Sydney Opera House.  Some
Australians, though, are seeing other things.  A "clutch of
critics" likened the new logo to everything from "a profile of
Woody Woodpecker to a rooster's mug to a pair of red-billed
toucans mating."  The 15-month search for the logo cost the
Sydney Organizing Committee A$300,000 ($237,390).  It was
produced by Melbourne-based FHA Image Design, and won't become
official until January 1 (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/19).
