ATLANTA LOOKS LONGINGLY FOR OLYMPIC FINANCIAL BONANZA

The economic impact of the Olympic Games on Atlanta is
examined by Margaret McCorry of "Bloomberg Business News." The
'96 Games "generated lots of hype but not enough dollars to put
Atlanta back in the black" as the Games organizers owe the city
around $9M for costs during the event. Part of the costs is
attributed to the bombing in Centennial Park, as the city "had to
shell out a lot more money for police overtime than expected."
But besides overtime, "organizers owe millions in cleanup costs
and tens of millions" to retrofit the Olympic Stadium for the
Braves. McCorry: "It's anyone's guess how much of that Atlanta
taxpayers will get back. First of all, no one knows yet how much
tax revenue the Games raked in. Second, no one knows how much
[ACOG] will make with its big liquidation sale." ACOG is trying
to sell off $15M worth of Atlanta-related "assets and
memorabilia" ("Bloomberg Business News," PBS, 9/17).
