     Scholastic Inc. and the NBA will launch Read Big, a reading
promotion program that will reward classes with NBA materials.
Classrooms are challenged to read 100 books by the end of
February '97, and once the Read Big goals have been met, classes
will receive a full set of NBA school supplies, including pencils
and book covers (NBA)....Classic Sports Network is reportedly
close to new distribution deals with HBO Ole to offer the channel
in Mexico and South America (BROADCASTING & CABLE, 9/16
issue)....The "makeover" of the fX cable channel with more sports
programming is profiled in ELECTRONIC MEDIA.  Doug Seay, Senior
VP/National Broadcast for Hal Riney & Partners: "I like the
people and the money behind it.  They are in it for the long run,
they are willing to deal and there are opportunities for
advertisers on the ground floor" (ELECTRONIC MEDIA, 9/16).
...Turner Sports' Harvey Schiller said a report of him returning
to the USOC "has no truth" (USA TODAY, 9/17).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
