NAMES IN THE NEWS

     L.A. Times sports columnist ALLAN MALAMUD died Monday at the
age of 54.  He apparently died of natural causes.  Malamud's
column "had been a fixture" in L.A. sports for more than 20
years.  He had been at the Times since '89 (L.A. TIMES,
9/17)....JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE will sign a contract today with the
ABL, the women's basketball league to debut in October. She will
play for the Richmond Rage. ABL insiders say Joyner-Kersee's
endorsement/public appearance schedule would reduce her to
playing in only 25-30 of Richmond's 40 regular season games
(RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 9/17). ...ANDREW SHUE has returned to
"Melrose Place" and has left the MLS L.A. Galaxy. He will not
play anymore in '96 (MIAMI HERALD, 9/15).....76ers Owner PAT
CROCE returned after visiting DERRICK COLEMAN in Detroit.
Croce's day included a workout, a visit to Motown music museum
"Hitsville USA," and a trip to Coleman's home (PHIL. DAILY NEWS,
9/16).
