OLYMPIC GROUPS REACH SALT LAKE MARKETING AGREEMENT

The framework of a joint marketing agreement between the
Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) and the USOC is in place,
according to Mike Gorrell of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The SLOC
Exec Board gave informal approval Thursday to a plan that will
"drive efforts" to raise private money to stage the 2002 Winter
Games, and to support the USOC's preparation of athletes for
those and other Games. The general agreement still must be
ratified later this fall by the full boards of SLOC and USOC.
While "considerable negotiations" remain to "nail down
specifics," SLOC Board Chair Frank Joklik said, "Progress is
being made, which is gratifying." Negotiations before the
Atlanta Games were "difficult, and by some accounts, left both
sides rather testy about their relationship," but SLOC President
Tom Welch says now, relationships have, "never been more
harmonious" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 9/13).
