G'DAY MATE: AUSTRALIA CHANGES TOP OLYMPIC OFFICIAL

The New South Wales territory government Friday gained
control of the Sydney Olympic Organizing Committee, replacing its
Chair, Woolworth Ltd. Chair John Iliffe, with Sports and Public
Works Minister Michael Knight, according to Melissa Turner of the
ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. The IOC "was thrilled with the change,"
as Sydney is "clearly distancing itself" from the private
enterprise organization that staged the Atlanta Games and is
"adopting the model of Barcelona," where the city government and
private organizers jointly staged the Games (ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION, 9/7).
AN "A" IN ECON: In Boston, John Powers notes that while
Atlanta's construction costs were $515M, Sydney's will only be
$156M, all of it underwritten by the New South Wales Government.
Sydney will also get $715M from NBC, $260M more than Atlanta
(BOSTON GLOBE, 9/8).
