COSTAS SAYS NO APOLOGY NEEDED OVER CHINA REMARKS

NBC's BOB COSTAS was a guest on "Tonight Show" with Jay
Leno. Costas was asked about his comments during the Olympics
Opening Ceremonies that drew criticism from Chinese groups who,
in turn, asked for a Costas apology. NBC Sports VP Ed Markey
later sent a letter to the group stating the network's position.
Costas: "It really is a ridiculous situation. The comments were
factual, and just as important, they were pertinent." More
Costas: "I have no intention to apologize for broadcasting
factual information. I'm sorry if someone was offended." Leno
asked Costas if he helped fellow Olympic commentator John Tesh
during the Games. Costas: "He came to me for some pointers, and
I did what I could to help him out as a sportscaster, and he
returned the favor. So on Tuesday. I'm opening up for Yanni at
the Hollywood Bowl" ("Tonight Show, NBC, 8/30).
