CLEARANCE SALE PUSHES BETTER RESULTS FOR S&R

A big summer clearance sale at all Sports & Recreation
stores helped deliver a "stronger second quarter than expected,"
according to the TAMPA TRIBUNE. Had Sports & Recreation not
taken a previously announced one-time charge of $55M, or
$1.74/share, it would have earned $1.4M or $.07/share. As it
stood, the company posted a net loss of $33.2M, or $1.67/share,
for the quarter ended July 28, against a profit of $3.7M, or
$.19/share for the year ago quarter (Lisa Blackman, TAMPA
TRIBUNE, 8/30). Paul Kangas noted shares of Sports & Recreation
were up 1 1/8 to 9 3/4, and despite lower second-quarter
earnings, same store sales were up 8%, "a lot better than
expected" ("NBR," 8/29).
RETAIL MOVE: Sportmart, Inc. has hired Jed Smith as VP/
Marketing for the 70-store chain, effective September 16. Smith
was VP/Creative & Client Services at the ADB Group, Chicago
(CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/30).
