IRL TO LIGHT UP THE TEXAS NIGHT WITH INAUGURAL LONGHORN 500

Bruton Smith, developer of Texas Motor Speedway, and IRL
President Tony George, announced the IRL will hold the inaugural
Longhorn 500 at the new track in a night race on June 7, 1997
(IRL). George said that beating CART, the IRL's rival Indy car
circuit, to the Dallas-Ft. Worth market "really wasn't an issue,"
and added the Speedway is free to negotiate with CART. George:
"We don't ask for exclusivity and we don't expect exclusivity."
One industry source said that in the wake of the IRL deal, CART
"backed off" plans for a July 5 race in Texas and is now looking
at a mid-September date in '97 (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 8/28).
