AFTER SEEING ROLE REDUCED, SAUER QUITS AS PIRATES PRESIDENT

Mark Sauer resigned as President of the Pirates yesterday,
ending his five-year tenure, according to Halvonik & Meyer of the
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Sauer, who was retained when the Kevin
McClatchy-led investment group bought the team in February, had
seen his role reduced in the organization, being assigned to the
effort to secure a new ballpark for the team. McClatchy said
yesterday he was looking for someone to replace Sauer as a
lobbyist for a new ballpark, but "hadn't decided to add someone
to the payroll or to hire an outside consultant." Sauer said his
five years were "a lot of fun," adding, "It was too much fun to
have any bitter feelings" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 8/28).
