LEAGUE NOTES

     USA TODAY's Bryan Burwell calls the NFL's preseason instant
replay experiment "a success" (USA TODAY, 8/21).... The IHL's
23rd All-Star Game will be held February 18, 1997, at the "brand
new" Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI.  The facility seats
10,834 for hockey (IHL)....U.S. national team captain John Harkes
said of MLS' inaugural season:  "It's gone very well.  I wasn't
expecting it to be this good."  Harkes did express disappointment
that MLS teams don't play in their own stadiums.  Harkes:  "I
would hope MLS is trying to put some kind of budget toward
getting our own soccer stadiums that hold 30,000-35,000
(GANNETT/USA TODAY, 8/21)....In Boston, Frank Dell'Apa reports
MLS will look to the south -- to South America and Africa -- for
new talent next season (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/21).
