FRANCHISE NOTES

     The new San Jose franchise in the women's American
Basketball League, the Lasers, unveiled their logo.  Lasers GM
Christine Forter on the name selection: "We wanted a name that
represented the area since we are in the heart of Silicon
Valley."  The logo was designed by Terry Smith who also created
the Sharks logo (Lasers)....Marlins OF Andre Dawson officially
announced his retirement yesterday.  Dawson on his plans:
"Hopefully, I can get my foot in the door in the front office"
(MIAMI HERALD, 8/15)....Executive sources in the CFL say Quebec
City is "at least" being considered as a possibility for an
expansion team next season or as a relocation site if the Ottawa
Rough Riders are forced to move (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/15).
