LESS IS MORE WITH MOORES: PADRES OWNER SEES $8M LOSS

Padres Owner John Moores projects his club will lose about
$8M this year, but he "is pleased with the number," according to
Tom Krasovic of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Last year, Moores
said the club lost about $17.5M. Moores: "We feel pretty good
about cutting our losses in half this year. We may do a little
better and get lucky, depending on attendance. Hopefully, next
year will be the year we have a shot at breaking even." But with
an increase in payroll expected next year, Moores said it will
take a "best-case scenario" to break even. The Padres have yet
to receive any money from revenue sharing, but he expects the
club to "benefit from a plan being reviewed by the players'
union." He also projects "more favorable terms" in the stadium
lease and greater revenue from local and national TV deals. The
team is on pace to draw over 2 million fans, which would rank
second in club history (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/13).
