CBS EXEC SAYS TURNER IS BEST BET FOR CABLE RIGHTS TO NAGANO

CBS Sports Senior VP/Production Rick Gentile said there is a
95% probability they will have a cable entity involved in Nagano,
according to BROADCASTING & CABLE. Gentile: "My guess is that
we will end up doing a deal with Turner." With retransmission
negotiations underway, CBS could have its own cable presence by
'98, but according to Gentile, even with their own cable network,
"we still might do a Turner deal. ... Dealing with Turner for the
Olympics makes the most sense for us financially." Nagano is the
only shot at Olympics coverage for Turner, or any other cable
network other than CNBC or MSNBC, until NBC's rights are up after
the 2008. Although Turner lost "millions" on cable rights or
Albertville and Lillehammer, for which it paid $20M and $30M
respectively, Turner still sees the Games as an "important asset"
(Michael Katz, B&C, 8/12 issue).
