Assistant Coach DEREK SMITH died of an apparent heart attack
while on a promotional cruise to Bermuda on Friday.  He was 34
(Bullets)....WILLIAM LEGGETT, who worked for SI for 30 years
covering thoroughbred racing, died on Friday from complications
due to a short illness. He was 64 (N.Y. POST, 8/10)....MLS
Revolution and U.S. national team defender ALEXI LALAS met with
the casting director for ABC's "Coach" to discuss "a cameo
appearance as a kicker" (MIAMI HERALD, 8/12)....NFLPA Exec Dir
GENE UPSHAW is profiled in a N.Y. TIMES piece entitled, "Once
Just a Union Man, He Is Now a Major Player" (N.Y. TIMES,
8/11)....KERRI STRUG was a guest on the "Tonight Show."  Strug:
"I am not really sure what is in my future, but it is looking
