COMCAST MOVING FORWARD FOR RIGHTS FOR 76ERS AND FLYERS

Comcast is "moving ahead with plans" to acquire TV rights to
the 76ers and Flyers for its proposed regional sports channel,
according to Jim McConville of BROADCASTING & CABLE. Those
rights are currently held by SportsChannel and Prism, but with
Comcast's joint purchase of the teams with Spectacor, officials
are trying to work out a deal to transfer team rights to Comcast.
SportsChannel GM Laureen Ong says the changeover will take place
after October 1, '97, when SportsChannel/Prism TV rights expire.
If Comcast were to acquire TV rights, "industry experts question
whether SportsChannel would stay in business." Comcast's new
channel will reportedly "be modeled after" MSG Network, and will
"carry a mix of pros and college sports, as well as indoor
soccer, lacrosse and the new AHL franchise, the Phantoms"
(BROADCASTING & CABLE, 7/29 issue).
