SPALDING REPORTEDLY CLOSE TO DEAL WITH ETONIC

     Spalding Sports Worldwide is expected to purchase Etonic, a
MA-based producer of golf and athletic shoes and apparel,
according to Steff Gelston of the BOSTON HERALD.  The deal has
been rumored "for several weeks," and analysts said a Spalding
alliance with Etonic "makes sense for Spalding, which derives
nearly half" of its $800M in revenue from its Top-Flite golf
division. Spalding is also currently for sale.   Etonic is "a
significant player in the golf shoe business," with estimated
sales of $75M in '95.  Of that, $30M was golf-shoe related
