CITY GIVES GIANTS A CHINA BASIN SURPRISE

     A 1,000-page document from San Francisco's City Planning
Department highlights the obstacles facing the construction of
China Basin ballpark by 2000, many of which "could prove costly,
either to the Giants or taxpayers," according to Edward Epstein
of the S.F. CHRONICLE.  The Waterfront Land Use Plan raises the
possibility of significantly altered traffic patterns on game
days, bridge improvements across China Basin and possible
subsidies for public transit.  Although he had yet to see the
document, Giants Exec VP Larry Baer said it would not "derail the
team's plans" and the team will "deal with them" (S.F. CHRONICLE,
7/26).
